POPPIES have replaced crosses at a monument near Hereford.
The Royal British Legion has placed 16 poppies on the war memorial in Lugwardine.
The poppies each represent a British death in Afghanistan, with the first appearing after Rifleman Sjt Paul McAleese, 29, died on a foot patrol in Sangin district, Helmand province, in August.
The Bartestree & District Branch marked each death with a wooden cross, but swapped them for poppies in September.
Meanwhile, a war veteran has been invited to Hereford Sixth Form College to attend an Armistice Day remembrance service.
Jim Jenkins, of Glewstone, will visit the college on Wednesday as its guest of honour.
Mr Jenkins joined the army in 1937 and embarked on a military career which included time spent in the Middle East.
