PLANS to build Hereford’s GP-led health centre next to the County Hospital have moved a step closer.
Herefordshire Council’s health scrutiny committee has expressed support for the centre to be located next to the hospital’s A&E department.
The committee, which met last Friday, was told that NHS Herefordshire and Hereford Hospitals NHS Trust had made strong progress on talks to build the new centre on the hospital site.
Talks with the hospital were restarted after NHS Herefordshire secured £1.5 million in Government money to build a state-of-the-art centre. If these are successful, the new hospital site will supersede a planning application to place the centre within one third of the grounds of the Stonebow Unit.
“Details of a possible agreement with Hereford Hospitals NHS Trust are now at a commercially sensitive stage, with potential contractors to build the new centre being contacted shortly,” said Robert Blower, spokesman for NHS Herefordshire.
He added that the primary care trust hoped to make a public announcement about the choice of site soon.
