SOLDIERS from across the Midlands are set for a heroes welcome as they march through Hereford next week.
Two hundred soldiers from 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards and B Company 1 RIFLES will take to the city’s streets on Tuesday.
The parade will start at 1pm at the Castle Green before moving past Hereford Cathedral. The Lord Lieutenant, Chairman of Herefordshire Council and City Mayor will take a salute from the Town Hall steps. The Parade will end at the TA Centre in Harold Street.
1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards (QDG) is a cavalry regiment which recruits soldiers from Wales and the Border Counties. Normally it operates the CVR(T) series of armoured cars, probing deep behind enemy lines to find out information and carry out raids. The Regiment is currently based in Paderborn in Germany. The regiment's lineage stretches back more than 300 years to the formation of the King’s Dragoon Guards (KDG) and the Queen’s Bays (Bays) in 1685. They amalgamated in 1959, so the Regiment is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Soldiers of the regiment have seen active service most recently in Afghanistan and before that two tours in Iraq as well as the 2003 Iraq War, Northern Ireland, Kosov, Bosnia, the 1991 Gulf War, Borneo, Aden and Lebanon.
