POLICE on the Welsh border have launched a special two-year volunteer cadet scheme for aspiring officers to gain experience and make new friends.

Candidates aged 16 who join the programme will complete various activities designed to develop team building and communication skills one night a week and also volunteer at special events like the Royal Welsh Show.

Chief Inspector Chris Curtis said: “It is an excellent opportunity to gain important life-skills and knowledge about the police.”

The scheme will start in Newtown in September and end in summer 2011.
