David Cameron supports Bill Wiggin in expenses row

CONSERVATIVE leader David Cameron has spoken out in support of Leominster MP Bill Wiggin, accused today of claiming a phantom mortgage.

Mr Cameron told interviewers that Mr Wiggin had made what looked like a bad but honest mistake in claiming for a mortgage on his constituency home when he meant to claim for his London home.

Mr Wiggin has been telling interviewers that he only claimed public money on the mortgage he had for his London home, but filled in the claim forms wrongly. It took just over two years for the parliamentary fees office to spot an error that Mr Wiggin said was immediately corrected, and has stayed so since.

This week Mr Wiggin told the Hereford Times that he was confident his expenses would stand up to scrutiny and, through the paper, called a public meeting in Leominster for constituents to quiz him on his claims. That meeting, in the Rankin Club, Corn Square, Leominster, at 4pm next Wednesday (May 27) is still going ahead.

There do not appear to be any comments either here or in other media re millionaire MPs claiming money. They do not need even their salaries, so claiming them is sheer greed.
In the 70s, 4 HCC councillors did not claim a penny of their entitlements - these fithy rich MPs, including Cameron, should be ashamed of taking money from the public when they obviously do not need it.

the police should be investigating this fraud, mps like bankers are accountable and those caught stealing from you and me should be under investigation and tried for their illegalimate gains made by being our MP

I have no sympathy with any MPs who have broken the rules, however, it is obvious the system is wrong but until it is changed I feel there is little point in crticising those who have used the system as it is.
As for Bill Wiggin, he appears to have made an honest mistake and as this was two years ago and he did not benefit financially I consider the matter closed.

I think the main question is how many M.P.'s have claimed council tax as an addtional expense, when Parliament has it's main summer shut down .

The expenses sheet quite clearly states, you can only claim for additonal expenses wholly, exclusively and necessarily incured to enable you to stay overnight away from your only or main home for the purpose of your parliamentary duties..
