MP's concern over Bulmer's job losses

HEREFORDSHIRE’s MPs have expressed sadness at the news cider giant Bulmers will shed more than 50 jobs in the city.

Bill Wiggin and Paul Keetch were speaking after news broke that around 54 positions will go in March as the bottling line at the Plough Lane base closes.

“These job losses are very sad news for the families affected,” said Mr Wiggin, who went on to attack Labour’s tax policies which, he believed, had placed new burdens on businesses such as Bulmers.

“Bulmers are pioneering environmentally and socially responsible practices but the government are penalising them.

“Instead of giving our cider producers real help during these tough times, the government’s actions are having a devastating effect on local businesses and families.”

Mr Keetch also added his voice to concern about closure plans, which are expected to be enforced by March.

He said he had spoken to Bulmers, which had assured him that those facing job losses would be offered voluntary redundancy, with support including outplacement and retraining to those who wanted to be employed in other areas, where possible.
