FIFTEEN brilliant young singers from Vermont, USA, will be bringing their sheer agility, vitality and power to Herefordshire next week.

Northern Harmony, led by Larry Gordon and Patty Cuyler, stretch the normal boundaries of choral music with their command of varied world ethnic singing styles: the wild and unrestrained American shape-note sound and Appalachian harmonies; village songs from Caucasus Georgia and the Balkans, featuring the hearty and ultra bright Bulgarian ‘hard voice’ and the equally powerful, but darker and more sonorous, Georgian timbre; harmonies from Corsican and Occitan oral traditions; and the rich and syncopated style of South African folksongs.

The choir will present a concert on Tuesday, October 28, at 7.30pm in St John’s Church, St Owen Street, Hereford, and on Sunday, October 26, they will lead a workshop for all interested singers, so, if you enjoyed watching Last Choir Standing, you can now try it for yourself for a whole day.

At the workshop, singers will have the opportunity to learn selected songs from Northern Harmony’s repertoire, alongside choir members who will help to teach and lead the various voice parts. You don’t need to be a practised singer or read music, just be ready to have a go.

Northern Harmony will also be working intensively with Hereford youth choir Primal Voice, formerly The Voice Squad, during their stay, and these young singers will join them for several numbers in the Tuesday night concert.

Admission to the workshop at St James’s School, Vicarage Road, is £20, £10 for under-16s, students and OAPs. For information, call 01432 278118; to book for Tuesday’s concert, call 01432 340555.

The events are sponsored by Nightjar Music and The Music Pool, in partnership with Primal Voice.
