I recently met actress Virginia McKenna who many know for her connection with the Herefordshire museum for Violette Szabo and who played the part of Violette in the film ‘They Carved Her Name With Pride’.
Virginia also made that wonderful l960’s animal wildlife film ‘Born Free Now in her late 70’s she still works extensively for the charity - the Born Free Foundation that she set up with her late husband, actor, Bill Travers and works tirelessly in Africa to help preserve life and educate people about respect for life, particularly vulnerable wildlife.
Closer to home, I have also recently written up about two dog rescue centres in Herefordshire who are battling not only with a continuous stream of abandoned and unwanted dogs, the emotion of dealing with abused and frightened animals but also the frustration of not being able to do anything about the mindlessness and irresponsible attitudes of their previous owners.
Both interviews led me think of about the selflessness of people who give up their time to work so passionately for defenceless animals. I also wondered how things could have ever got so bad.
