Wireless warning for Ledbury residents

3:30pm Friday 18th July 2008

WIRELESS broadband users have been urged to check their passwords following reports of hacking in Ledbury.

PC owners who use a wireless router to get online could be at risk from cybertheft. Ledbury PC Pete Askwith said two laptop users were seen outside a Homend home.

According to PC Askwith, the transmission from a wireless router can be picked up outside the home.

Setting up a long password could make a laptop secure, otherwise files and data could be at risk.

“The signal travels in an arc around the router and goes through walls so it can reach the street,” said PC Askwith. “People who do not make their routes secure could find that others can get free access to the internet and possibly to files and personal data.”

Anyone who sees a laptop user outside a house acting suspiciously can call police on 08457 444888.
