Cyclist seriously injured in Hereford

A MAN was seriously injured after a bicycle and a car were in collision in Hereford.

The ambulance service was called to the Roman Road shortly after 2.20pm yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

Three rapid response vehicles, an ambulance, a MARS emergency doctor and the county air ambulance were dispatched to the scene.

John Hawker, press officer for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: “When the first paramedic in a rapid response vehicle arrived at scene, two off-duty nurses from Leominster Community Hospital were helping a man who had been injured after his bicycle and a car were in a collision.

“The man, believed to be in his late teens or early 20s, had suffered severe chest and head injuries.

"Crews carried out emergency treatment on the man at the scene.

"He was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board before being airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital Major Trauma Unit, whilst receiving further care from the doctor who travelled with the man in the helicopter."

He added that the paramedic, who was first on scene, would like to thank the two off-duty nurses and also two off-duty firefighters who assisted with the patient before other ambulance crews arrived.
