9:24am Tuesday 6th May 2008

By Philip Wilkinson-Jones »

FAMILIES are being invited to spend a day in the life of conservators at a north Herefordshire castle.

The Keeping the Piece Salvage and Conservation weekend at Croft Castle, near Lucton, provides an insight into the work of the National Trust to protect and preserve its historic houses and objects.

Visitors can see how conservators tackle the ‘five agents of decay’ - light, wear and tear, insects and moulds dust and dirt, damp and heat - and find out about archaeological conservation taking place at the Iron Age hill fort at Croft Ambrey.

Family activities, such as a bug trail and salvage game, and conservation tours start from 11am on May 10 and 11. The castle opens at 1pm and normal admission charges apply.
