Leominster handyperson scheme closes

2:30pm Friday 25th April 2008

A LEOMINSTER charity has announced the closure of a popular community service.

The Handyperson Scheme had been carrying out small jobs for over 50s for the past ten years.

It closed after provision of the service for Herefordshire as a whole was put out to tender and Age Concern Leominster and District (ACLD)failed in a bid to win the contract to keep it going.

Colette Colman, chief executive of ACLD, said more than 700 jobs were completed in north Herefordshire last year.

“I know many older people will be disappointed to hear that we will no longer be in a position to help.

“I would like to thank everyone who supported the scheme especially the staff and volunteers - they all worked really hard to run the scheme and it is part of our mission statement to enable older people to remain in their own homes independently for as long as possible.

“In many cases our Handyperson team provided a much-needed lifeline.”

Over 50s in need of help with small jobs around the home can still contact ACLD on 01568 611054, where they will be put them in touch with other providers.
