A LONG-running scheme to replace a village school has been approved by Herefordshire councillors.
Cabinet members have backed plans to build a new primary school in Staunton-on-Wye.
Members faced losing £1.6 million in government funding by not backing the plans on Thursday (March 27).
The grant was dependent on council support, and a deadline of March 31 was imposed.
The £1.6 million represents 90% of the total costs, with the remainder coming from governors and other sources.
Planning permission for a previous scheme has lapsed, and new plans will for a 70 pupil school will be submitted shortly.
