STRONGER government leadership is needed to reduce poverty and stop young adults leaving Herefordshire.

They are the findings of Dr Stuart Burgess, the chairman of the Commission for Rural Communities, who spent part of last year researching communities throughout the county to get an insight into the aspirations and concerns of residents.

His report, carried out across rural England, found almost one million households living in poverty, with Herefordshire not immune.

"I did come across poverty in Herefordshire, especially among the elderly," said Dr Burgess.

"Herefordshire is a very beautiful county, but it is often wrongly identified as being a very rich county."

Dr Burgess believes problems need to be remedied: "especially to help young adults stay in the county".
