TWO Bromyard men are calling for a public protest against a 63% council tax rise.

Bromyard Town Council's bid for the Rowberry Street office is being questioned by Chris Pooley and Des Newman.

The bid means an extra £50 on the average Bromyard council tax bill, not including proposed rises from Herefordshire Council and emergency services.

The pair have set up the Herefordshire Citizens Association to challenge the rise, and to act as a watchdog to Herefordshire Council.

They hope 56 residents will protest at Monday's town council meeting, at 7.30pm, cancelling the 56 who voted to buy the office at a meeting, last May.

For more information, contact D.C. Pooley on 01885 483195, or Des Newman on 01885 488109.

The Isitfair campaign is well aware of the rises in council tax this year. The Parish and Town councils are not, like the county, district, police and fire, capped. The Government does not intend to cap these councils. We found that last year, the precepts set by these councils, pushed the final demand for council tax up by as much as 7%. Much of this was due to the districts pushing services, generally supplied by them, down to the town and parish councils. Please go to our website www.isitfair.co.uk Isiktfair is a nationwide campaign with thousands of members across the country. Our only aim is the reformation of the council tax system. This must include the introduction of a fair grant system and a tightening of the purse strings in local government.

I think it really is time to assess the need for Herefordshire to have so many tin pot town councils. Not only are they costing all of us extra in council tax but their worth is difficult to judge. The behaviour of Bromyard councillors recently - violent scuffles between councillors and members of the public - leaves much to be desired. The investigations into Kington Council found councillors flouting financial regulations and acting as a law unto itself. And a power crazed Ledbury councillor recently sabotaged the town's bid to have a new library because he didn't like the idea of a modern purpose built building. The standard of councillor is extremely poor. Few people come forward to contest the seats and frankly we don't bother to vote either for fear it only encourages them. The press rarely focus on the bizarre 'Vicar of Dibley' escapades of the tin pot town councils but perhaps they should - they seem to be off the radar as far as public accountability goes.
