FOUR drivers have been prosecuted in a crackdown on Blue Badge misuse in the county.

Since the start of the year more than 500 Blue Badge disabled parking permits have been checked by Herefordshire Council.

The council say they are committed to tackling abuse of the scheme, which allows disabled people, often with severe mobility problems, to park close to vital services.

But the council says the system can be open to abuse, especially by partners, relatives or friends of badge holders, to get free and convenient parking.

Misusing a Blue Badge can lead to a fine of up to £1000 and a criminal record, plus a parking penalty charge.

A council spokesperson said: "Those who misuse a Blue Badge may not think it will affect anyone, but removing an accessible parking space for those who need it can seriously hinder their ability to live an independent life."

Badge holders in Herefordshire have access to up to three hours free parking in council car parks, and access to a number of nationwide on-street parking concessions.

But the badge can only be used by the named badge holder, or by a person who has dropped off or is collecting them from the place where the vehicle is parked.

Misuse can be reported to Herefordshire Council’s parking services by calling 01432 260974 or emailing civilparkingenforcement@herefordshire.gov.uk

It is a criminal offence to: use someone else's badge; display one unless the holder is a passenger in the vehicle; display an expired one; continue to display one after it is needed.
