FIVE young girls from Herefordshire are on a mission to save one of the world's most endangered animals.
The Madley Primary School youngsters have raised more than £250 to help the Ross-on-Wye-based Marine Conservation Society (MCS), protect marine turtles around the world.
Katie Shearer, Libby Snell, Sophie Lyons, Annie Roper and Ellis Howell were inspired by a talk by MCS's Peter Richardson, who featured in the BBC television series Saving Planet Earth, describing a project he set up in Sri Lanka in which people who once poached turtle eggs for a living, are employed to protect them.
The girls sold ice creams, cakes and milkshakes to fellow pupils during the summer term, not only raising money for the turtles but helping their school to gain silver status in the Eco-Schools Award Scheme.
MCS wants the public to learn more about turtles, and is giving away the chance to win an adopt a turtle' pack as well as a cuddly turtle toy. Go to www.mcsuk.org for more details.
