EIGHT primary school children completed a 16.5km ride across the mountains as part of a longer relay.

Seven of the children from Michaelchurch Escley Primary School rode mountain bikes, while one rode a horse.

They were joined by four adults, three riding mountain bikes and one riding a horse, on the trip from from Michaelchurch Primary to Hay-on-Wye Primary School.

It was part of a 110km relay from Cardiff Bay to Hay-on-Wye to deliver a message to political leaders regarding the importance of achieving the United Nations Goal 4 - to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning.

Gary Crocker, deputy head teacher at Michaelchurch, said: "We were surprised by Sapling and Acorn Classes, who had walked ahead earlier, at 1.5km into our journey.

"They were waiting at Michaelchurch Court with cheers and words of encouragement.

"From the court we continued to Craswall and then on into the mountains, climbing steadily all the way.

"We then enjoyed a superb descent into Hay. It was then off the bikes (the horses had to stay outside) and into an assembly to hand over the baton."
