A HEREFORD based cycling team are bringing racing back to the county's roads.

The inaugural Emma Louise Young Memorial Road Race will take place on a circuit around Norton Canon on June 3.

The event is being organised by the ELY Race Club which is created by a group of racing cyclists who created their own team to raise funds and awareness for the charity.

As part of the West Midlands Road Race League competitors will travel from across the region to race over 10 laps of a circuit from Norton Cannon to Weobley and then Whitehill before looping back around making a total distance of 73 miles.

The ELY Race Club, now in its second year, was founded by Kyle Dovey, the cousin of Emma Louise Young.

"Cycling died off a bit in the county after NFTO withdrew so we thought about what we needed and set up our own team," said Dovey.

"With the road race we are hoping to bring cycling back into Herefordshire as a road racing event wasn't held last year. It's also really good for us as a new club to try and stretch our wings."

The club has seen an expanding membership with cyclists from Worcestershire and Wales also joining the team.

Ely Race Club held some circuit races last year at Stourport which they also intend to organise again this year. On the non racing side the club are also holding a sportive style event later this summer with several routes ranging from those suitable for a family ride up to a 100 mile endurance ride.
