A CHARITY which sends supplies to help refugees and migrants in Calais was featured in a TV show about the life of vicars in Herefordshire.

A Vicar's Life on BBC2 focuses on the day-to-day lives of four vicars from the Hereford Diocese and has highlighted many different issues within the community.

The Friday night series has seen Reverend Nicholas Lowton of the Black Mountains group support farmers facing eviction from their council-owned tenant farm, and also trial champing (camping at churches) at Craswall church.

While the show has seen Father Matthew Cashmore from the West Hereford team help Samantha Lamputt, who camped on the A49 Debenhams roundabout, find a home.

Last week's show saw Father Matthew travelling to Calais with the People in Motion team to take food and camping equipment to refugees and migrants who remain in Calais hoping to find a route to Britain.

David Bland, one of the founding trustees of the charity was featured in the show, and said: "That was a real trip. It was my eighth trip in two years. We go and help out. It helps us to understand the situation best if we spend time on the ground.

"We will keep doing it out of love and compassion for fellow human beings as long as the need is there."

People in Motion was started two and a half years ago. Initially there was a collection point in Leominster but Herefordshire Council needed this space back.

The team joined up with People in Motion in Malvern and they are currently collecting and sorting donations at a site between Bromyard and Malvern.

Ideally the charity would like to find a space in Hereford to collect donations and store them.

David said: "When we were doing the sorting in Leominster people came and joined in with the sorting. They got to know people. It was just brilliant for life in Leominster to have people getting together."

Every week a van of donations is sent out: some go up to a partner organisation in Cheshire and a container is sent to Greece or Syria. Others go directly to Calais.

They also encourage volunteers to go to Calais with the next trip due on March 3.

Can you help provide a sorting base? They are looking for spaces that are at least 1,000 square feet which they can use for a period of at least six months. If you can help call 07845 337030

If you would like to donate there are drop off points at Christadelphian Church Hall in Holmer Road and St Martin’s Church in Ross Road.

Go to Facebook and search for People in Motion to find out what is suitable to donate.

This Friday's episode of A Vicar's Life at 8.30pm focuses on the street pastors and helping the elderly in the community.
