DR David Drew, Labour MP for Stroud in Gloucestershire, and shadow minister for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, was the guest speaker at a meeting of the Hereford and South Herefordshire Constituency Labour Party on January 11. The meeting was hosted by the Ross and District Labour Party Branch at The Larruperz Centre in Ross-on-Wye.

Dr Drew shared his experience of representing the people of Stroud, a rural constituency with issues similar to those of rural Herefordshire and its market towns. He commented that Stroud is not considered by some to be a natural Labour seat, yet by campaigning and talking to people to establish their needs and priorities, the seat was won by Labour in the general election last year.

Dr Drew also answered questions about current parliamentary processes and the difficulties of influencing legislative debate when in opposition. Other questions that generated considerable discussion included the recent environmental policy announced by Theresa May, the NHS crisis, re-nationalisation of the railways, electoral reform, Brexit, the government's austerity policy and its impact on health and welfare.
