Hereford College of Arts (HCA) is once again celebrating the talent of local young photographers with the annual Young Photographers competition. Submissions are being accepted from photographers aged 9 - 16 and this year’s theme - Bravery - will celebrate all forms of bravery and entrants are encouraged to think as creatively about the brief as they can.

Last year, the competition theme was ‘My favourite place’ and HCA received around 400 submissions from more than 200 participating young people. Winners included Molly Jones, 17, who attended Llanfyllin High School, and won Category 1 (age 16-19 years) with a striking image of a young woman sailing at sunset.

Competition and exhibition organiser, Polly Hathaway said, “We love seeing how differently young people respond to the theme and we are always in awe of the talent on our door step! I’d remind entrants that being brave isn’t always about being daring and heroic, sometimes it’s as simple as trying something new – remember that it’s good to take creative risks. Most of all though, I’d advise them to have fun!”

Winners will be rewarded with cash prizes up to £75 and smartphone lens kits.

The deadline for entries is February 16, after which the photographs will be displayed in an exhibition at HCA’s Folly Lane campus from March 23 to April 5. Winners will be announced at a private view of the exhibition on Thursday, March 22.
