THE federation which offers extended GP services in the county has highlighted the new way patients will book in with their doctor surgeries over the phone.

Taurus Healthcare, which provides evening and weekend appointments, said many GP practice staff may now ask patients questions about their reason for contacting the practice.

This is to help guide the patient to the most suitable professional to help, as it could be a nurse practitioner or healthcare assistant.

Dr Mike Hearne, medical director from Taurus Healthcare, Herefordshire’s GP Federation, said: “Many people aren’t aware how GPs are part of a much wider team, with each member playing a crucial role.

"Nurses, healthcare assistants, pharmacists and the rest of the team can often be the best person to see, and can be available more quickly. This helps patients receive the right care at the right time, and helps us to ensure that the right person is available to help."

The GP federation also suggests patients see their local pharmacist when they have minor ailments like cold and flu symptoms, go to an opticians when they have problems with their eye such as in-growing eye lashes, and suggested the health lifestyle trainer service to support patients to stop smoking.
