THOSE crossing Whitney-on-Wye toll bridge may have a shock on Saturday.
The bridge which was built in the 1770s will be guarded by First World War re-enactors raise awareness and funds for the memorial to Allan Leonard Lewis VC.
Allan was born in Whitney-on-Wye in 1895 and his family worked on the local estate.
Herefordshire's only born and bred VC awardee died in battle in the First World War and has no known grave.
The owners of Whitney-on-Wye toll bridge Maggie Taylor and Graham Penny, have generously agreed for members of the A L Lewis VC Memorial Fund to take all tolls and donations on the day.
Additionally Barclays Bank have offered matched funding.
The Memorial Fund is seeking to raise money for a life-sized statue of Allan to be placed in Hereford City Centre, on the centenary of his death on September 21, 2018.
