FURTHER roadworks have been announced on major routes into Hereford to add to the increasing number of works taking place across the city.

Resurfacing works are going to take place on the A4103 Hereford to Worcester road, the A465 Hereford to Abergavenny road, and the A438 Hereford to Brecon road.

Herefordshire Council said the work will begin on September 18- daytime closures will be in place between 8am and 6pm on the rural sites that are less congested and have good alternative routes.

The majority of resurfacing within the city limits will be carried out between 6pm and 1am.

Advanced road closure signs will be in place for a minimum of seven days in advance of works, and diversion routes will be signed during the period that each section of these roads are closed.

These closures add to the misery already expected for drivers to the city.

The A49 southbound in Newtown Road is going to be closed from Monday for nine weeks, with a diversion taking drivers from the Starting Gate roundabout to Aylestone Hill.

There are also traffic lights in place on Grandstand Road, as part of work by Welsh Water to install 7.5 kilometres of pipes over 18 months.

The A438 at Lugg Flats has been closed since the end of July but is expected to open again on Monday.

A spokesman for Herefordshire Council said they are able to carry out the major resurfacing works on the three main routes across Herefordshire thanks to a successful bid to the Department for Transport’s Challenge Fund.

The spokesman said the work supports Herefordshire’s economic growth by investing in the condition of key transport routes leading to Herefordshire’s Enterprise Zone.

The spokesman added: "All of the resurfacing works are being co-ordinated with other roadworks around the county to minimise delays as far as possible.

"However, inevitably, given this scale of investment in Herefordshire’s roads the works will result in delays for some motorists and the public are urged to allow extra time for their journeys.

"Herefordshire Council and Balfour Beatty Living Places would like to thank the public in anticipation of their understanding of what will be an unprecedented programme of resurfacing work that will deliver a real improvement in the condition of these key routes across Herefordshire."

The major resurfacing works must be carried out within the timescales set by the Department of Transport (18 September 2017 to 31 March 2018), and wherever possible, works have been planned to minimise disruption.
