HUNDREDS of cyclists made a 'wheelie' big success of a popular bike event supporting St Michael’s Hospice.

Almost 700 cyclists ranging from club enthusiasts to leisure riders and families tackled the annual Wheelie Big Cycle on Sunday.

Fundraisers had the choice of four routes – 16, 32, 60 and 93 miles – all of which started and finished at Hereford’s Livestock Market on Roman Road.

The annual event, which is sponsored by Vertu Motors Hereford and is one of the biggest of its kind in the region, is expected to raise more than £30,000.

Many of those taking part did so with family and friends and the cyclists were set on their way by seven-time Paralympic Gold medal-winning swimmer Sascha Kindred, who lives in Hereford.

He said: "It’s been great to see so many people, all with a smile on their face. There were a lot here who I recognised. I had a lot of fun."

The event was made possible thanks to dozens of volunteers and hospice champions who gave up their time to help with various duties, including marshalling.

Event director Nicki Lloyd was delighted so many people had taken part.

She said: "It’s been a great day with another wonderful turnout. This is a very special event, particularly as it is popular among both leisure and competent cyclists.

"We would like to say a big thank you to those who give up their time to make events like this happen."
