SEARCHES for a person in the River Wye in Ross-on-Wye were called off yesterday afternoon.
The alarm was first raised yesterday morning at around 10.30am when a member of the public contacted police after seeing an abandoned dog on an island in the river opposite Wilton Hall in Ross.
Police said the dog's behaviour on the larger northern island opposite the hall indicated that its owner had possibly entered the river and a short time later the dog also entered the river.
Fire crews from Ross-on-Wye, Whitchurch and Hereford were called to rescue the dog but when firefighters arrived, the dog had already self-rescued.
Police said today that searches were called off yesterday afternoon after there was no sight of a person in the river and no report of a missing person in the area.
The dog ran off despite attempts from rescue personnel.
