POULTRY firm Cargill has picked up an industry accolade for its 'split pack' which is helping to combat food waste.

The Tesco IGD 'Supplier Innovation Award' was presented to Cargill's Chris Hall by Jason Tarry, chief product officer for Tesco.

The perforated split pack is designed for two chicken fillets, taking the form of a modular food tray that splits into components.

This allows the storage of food as individual portions in completely sealed, secure packs.

Chris Hall, from Cargill, said: "We are thrilled to receive an award that demonstrates our consumer insight, sustainability and project management capability.

"This project also won the UK Packaging Award for 'Resource Efficient Pack of the Year' run by Packaging News Magazine which highlights the sustainable advantages for single person households.

"I am delighted for my team as they had many hurdles to overcome in making this idea into a reality."

The pack has a specially-designed perforation making it easier for customers to separate portions without breaking the seal; this keeps food fresher for longer.

It means customers only use what they need and can keep the rest of it in the fridge with all the shelf-life and food safety benefits of an unopened pack.
