A RUGBY match in memory of a young farmer who died earlier this year has raised just short of £5,000 for charity.

The Sam Palmer Memorial rugby match saw 400 people attend Hereford Rugby Club on Saturday as Pontrilas RFC beat Hereford Old Boy's 26-19, thanks to a late try.

Sam who had a love for rugby and played for a young farmers team died in January, aged 29, after suffering a heart attack.

Organised by Daniel Jenkins and Sophie Dale the memorial match saw many of the rugby players Sam used to play with come out of retirement raising money for the British Heart Foundation.

Daniel said that the amount raised was just shy of £5,000.

"It was overwhelming how much we raised and how many people attended which made for a fantastic atmosphere," said Daniel.

"Everybody was glad to be there and spoke so fondly of.

"It became very sunny before we came out to play which I thought was Sam getting ready for us and it was an emotional moment that choked me. Some of the Hereford Old Boys hadn't played rugby for over 10 years but decided to play for Sam and some players travelled from across the country for the match."

Alongside the rugby match refreshments were provided by The Beefy Boys and a raffle was also held.

Daniel hopes that the fundraising event can be bigger and better next year.
