THE Ministry of Defence has applied for planning permission to build on the Taste for Adventure site in Credenhill.

The planning application said the barrack buildings at the SAS camp need replacing, which means a building contractor's compound is required.

Taste for Adventure was the brainchild of Brummie Stokes, who passed away last year, and it moved to the Credenhill site in 1996.

The 2.3 hectares site was sold to the MOD, which currently rents the land to Taste for Adventure on a short term lease.

The planning application said: "Due to operational issues associated with the barracks there is a need for the contractors compound to be located outside of the existing barracks.

"For instance, this will allow the appointed contractor(s) to organise, manage and store the materials, before they are taken into the barracks; park vehicles, locate site cabins for offices and welfare, and locate plant."

The application proposes 52 car parking spaces.

Access for construction traffic would be via the main Taste for Adventure site access onto the A480, with minor changes proposed to the access geometry.

Taste for Adventure looked for alternative facilities and has applied to the council for a change of use at Unit 1a, Holmer Trading Estate in Hereford, with a decision expected soon.

Brummie's son, Sam, and his colleague Sam Clarke, want to create an indoor bouldering facility and also use it as a base to continue its charitable work with the youth, adult and older people, both with and without special needs, in Herefordshire.

The majority of the trading estate is to be demolished and replaced with homes, but the building where they have applied for permission is an exception with two thirds already occupied and in industrial use.

They want to utilise part of the building that was previously used by Cavanaghs for their canteen, changing room and paint shop.
