PUPILS in a Herefordshire school have taken a journey through the Seven Wonders of the World from the comfort of their own classroom.

The latest in technology has allowed Kingstone High School pupils to take virtual journeys to a number of places in the world, bringing them to life from within the classroom.

Google Expeditions attended the school last week with smart phones loaded with the Google expedition app and Google cardboard virtual reality goggles for students to use.

Students learnt about the Borneo Rainforest, the Seven Wonders of the World, and the Great Barrier Reef using the goggles which allowed the pupils to have 360 degree views of the locations.

Pupils were also immersed in journeys back in time to the Battle of Hastings and Jurassic period.

Kingstone High School also invited Years 5 and 6 students from local primary schools: Clehonger C of E, Madley PS along with Kingstone & Thruxton PS to take part in the experience.

Amy Knibbs, Curriculum Lead for Computing at Kingstone Academy Trust, said: “This is an innovation that can capture the imagination of students and has such great educational value.

"Using just their smartphone, the App software and Google cardboard, students can immerse themselves in virtual reality trips to anywhere. Students from primary through to secondary school were amazed with the 360 degree views of destinations and thoroughly enjoyed the journey, led by the teacher, through the destination.

"Teachers are able to point out places/objects of interest and also to pause the expedition to allow students to engage in discussion about their journey. This technology is not only affordable for schools but enables all students to experience the journey.”
