A NUMBER of Lady Hawkins' Sixth Form historians and the school's office manager, Mrs Hughes, appeared on local radio recently.

The reason for their media celebrity was due to research into Mrs Hughes' grandmother who worked at the Rotherwas Ordnance Factory during the First World War and, along with her sister, played football in one of the women's teams from the munitions factory.

The History Department visited the Rotherwas site and were guided by expert Angela Williams and volunteers from the ROF Project.

The students were able to see inside the buildings where the munitions were made, the shells were filled and the picric acid was stored. Their incredible and unique experience enabled them to tour the site and learn about those who worked there in both World Wars.

The story of Sadie and Honor Lloyd, compiled by the Lady Hawkins' School History Department, can be found on the excellent Kington Remembers website kingtonremembers.org.uk/?page_id=199)
