CONSTRUCTION is due to begin on five border primary schools after £11.8 million worth of funding was approved by the Welsh Government.

Powys County Council has received the money towards a total project cost of £23.8 million.

Hay-on-Wye Community Primary School will have a new 210 place school built which will replace the existing school which currently has 161 pupils from reception to year six age groups. The school will include facilities for early years provision, as well as youth and community facilities and a public library.

Bronllys/Talgarth Community Primary School will have a 150 place school built on a greenfield site in Talgarth which will replace two existing schools. It will also have early years, youth and community facilities.

Clyro Church in Wales School; Llangors Church in Wales School; and Archdeacon Griffiths Church in Wales, Llyswen, will also have new school buildings built.

Kirsty Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, said: “This will be very welcome news to these communities, many of whom have been campaigning for new school buildings for several years.”

“It is also good news that all of the new schools will have early years provision and many will have community facilities included in the new facilities.

“I look forward to seeing the new schools open and the benefits they will bring to local people.”
