A POPULAR figure in the running community and fitness fanatic has died aged 60.

Mick Ligema died of natural causes last Wednesday shortly after arrival at Hereford County Hospital.

Tributes have been paid on the Croft Ambrey Running Club website this week to the popular man.

Club Secretary Guy Whitmarsh wrote: “One of the stalwarts of the club, Mick Ligema, has just died, having fallen ill shortly after a run.

“Because of failing eye-sight he hadn’t competed much of late, but has a proud record of achievements, particularly on the fell-running scene, where he had been Midland Fell Running champion.

“He also still holds the record for the Croft cross-country course.”

Mr Ligema was also Herefordshire Council’s cultural services manager.

Alistair Neill, chief executive for Herefordshire Council, added: “Mick was such a respected and well-liked member of staff, who made a significant contribution to the leisure and cultural life of Herefordshire through his work for Herefordshire Council.

“We were of course shocked and deeply saddened by the news last week, however in the days that followed so many colleagues and councillors came forward with distinct and always very positive memories of working with Mick. He will not be forgotten.”

Scott Rolfe, Halo Leisure CEO added: "Halo's relationship with Mick goes back many years to the time when he was one of our leisure centre managers when the company was founded in 2002.

"Even when he later moved to work for Herefordshire Council his knowledge and experience in sport and leisure proved vital as he remained one of our key partners and supporters over the years.

"Myself and my team are deeply shocked and upset and the tragic loss of Mick and our thoughts are with his family and closest friends.

"We will miss him dearly."
