HEREFORDSHIRE has been well represented again in the New Year’s Honours list, with 10 awards coming the county’s way.

This year two county residents have been awarded CBEs.

Paralympic champion Sascha Kindred has been made CBE for his services to swimming, having won a total of 62 major championship medals including seven golds at Paralympic games, 11 golds at World Championships and 14 golds at European championships.

Hay-on-Wye resident Heléna Herklots, chief executive of Carers UK has also received a CBE for services to carers.

She has led Carers UK since 2012, after working for 25 years on ageing and older people’s issues. She has worked with older people and their families in day centres and care homes, to campaigning for change, to developing and providing care and support services.

OBE:

Kington's Sheila Ann Hardwick, Senior Scientific Officer at the Centre for Applied Science and Technology Home Office, for services to Forensic Science.

Air Vice Marshal Michael David Smart, DL, Vice chairman (Air) Council of Reserve Forces and Cadets Associations, for voluntary service to the Armed Forces and the ex-Service community.

MBE:

Maj James Newton Hereford, DL, for services to the Rifles Regiment and to the community in Herefordshire.

Glyn Ian Morgan, for services to Hereford Cathedral and the community in Herefordshire.

Mary Elizabeth Quinn, from Leominster, education consultant and lately executive principal at Stourport High School and Sixth Form College for services to education.

Professor Fiona Ruth Sampson, from Carey, for services to literature and the literary community.

British Empire Medal (BEM)

Barbara Mitcheson, secretary of Bodenham Flood Protection Group, for services to the community in Herefordshire.

Eva Elizabeth Ann Thomas, for services to the community in Little Hereford.
