LUCTONIANS director of rugby Alex Davidson believes his team need to learn how to close games out after conceding two late tries to lose 31-29 to South Leicester in National League 2 North.

The Kingsland side were leading 29-17 with just five minutes left, but individual mistakes led to the away side clinching the win.

The turnaround was reminiscent of the Chester loss that Lucs sustained earlier in the season when they also threw away a commanding lead.

"You would think we would have learnt from the mistakes made in that game," said Davidson.

"We need some senior leaders because years ago we would have not given the scrum-half the ball at the end, we would have just kept it tight.

"Louis Silver is one of the senior players in the team, but he made an individual error that cost us the win.

"We should have been 20 points clear, but we scored four tries so still got two points and have got the 30-point haul that I wanted by Christmas."

Luctonians' excellent start saw them lead after 20 minutes thanks to tries from Rob Crowley and Alex Smith, but South Leicester soon upped their game.

Their strong pack brought them back into the game thanks to a penalty try and a Ryan Hough effort, both converted by Rickie Aley.

A penalty just before half time from Silver saw Lucs go into the break 15-14 ahead.

And that lead was increased in the early stages of the second half after Jordan Street and Piers Morell went over.

Even after Riley kicked over a penalty, a home win looked on the cards.

But a never-say-die attitude from South Leicester, coupled with mistakes from Lucs, saw the game turned on its head.

First, Riley converted Calum Gunn's try before he added the extras to Chris Gibbs' touchdown to clinch the win.

Luctonians travel to Scunthorpe this Saturday and Davidson is confident his side can put in a similar performance to the one they displayed in their last away game at Tynedale.

"If we learn learn from the mistakes we made on Saturday, then we can get an unexpected win there," added Davidson.
