VOLUNTEERS have been getting stuck into improving habitats for wildlife at a Leominster wood.

Leominster Millennium Wood was planted in 2000 and now has a variety of species living reside within the trees, hedgerows and wet woodlands.

To support and encourage biodiversity across the 105,200 sq metres of woodland, Leominster Community Greening Group successfully applied for funding from the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust.

The £2,350 grant has enabled bird and bat boxes to be installed to provide havens for diminishing populations as part of their Species Action Plan for bats. The team also planned to coppice trees to manage disease, tackle invasive species, create new footpaths with planting blocks, and improve existing pathways to address waterlogging.

A spokesman for the project said: "The funding we received has helped us to make improvements that are essential for the maintenance and development of woodland habitats. Our aim was to support species important to the River Lugg and its nature conservation status, as well as providing diverse woodland and nature walks for Leominster residents.

"An additional benefit is that the area also offers environmental education opportunities for our community.”
