HOPE Support Services launched its first ever targeted discussion group in a brand new support programme for its online community.

Five university students and graduates who have all experienced a family health crisis came together for a private, confidential Facebook 'meeting' to share thoughts, helpful advice and coping strategies.

The session marks the first in the new support series, which aims to give students who are living away from home a place to connect.

Future group sessions are already being planned for topics such as preparing for bereavement or coping with overwhelming feelings, as well as age specific themes like juggling exams when caring for a relative.

"It's fantastic to be able to offer a space where young people can share their experiences of leaving an ill family member at home when they are away at uni," said online support facilitator Ros Owens.

"They are all at different stages, so some may have had a parent who has just been diagnosed, and some may have a sibling receiving end of life care – there's a supportive understanding within the group, and it's a great way of them helping each other by talking about their own situations."

Hope Online has been running for the last year thanks to funding from BBC Children in Need, and is now reaching more young people than ever.
