HEREFORD has a long and wonderful history with the FA Cup.

The names of Addison, Radford and George will forever be linked not only to the city’s past but to that of the country’s national sport itself.

But now new names are making their mark – and a new team, too.

Westfields FC were not even in the shadow of their Edgar Street neighbours for much of their lifetime.

But the club that is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary is now making a name for itself outside of the county boundary.

Sean Edwards’ men sit at the top of the Midland League Premier Division and now have a third round FA Cup qualifying match where victory could land them with a tie against the likes of Tranmere Rovers, Wrexham or Chester City.

The cup run has brought them new supporters as was proved by the crowd which topped 300 to see them defeat Alvechurch in the league earlier this season.

Many of those present that night will also attend Edgar Street and are among the group that has found a new love for the sport through non-league football.

For the penny has finally dropped with a growing number of fans who can see there is no point subsidising Premier League wages through sky-high ticket prices and television subscription packages.

And many of those watching Hereford and Westfields have now realised that watching local football is not only cheaper but more entertaining and rewarding too.
