WHITTON WI celebrated the national year of sport promoted by the National Women's Institute with an afternoon of activities. Some 6,300 WIs across the UK were challenged to get their local community involved in exercise.

The afternoon which was free of charge and open to all, saw a mixture of sports available from indoor bowling taster sessions with instruction given by Whitton Bowling Club through to 'new age kurling'. This proved to be very popular, with people of all ages and physical ability being able to join in.

Kurling for the uninitiated is a form of the original curling game, but adapted so that it can be played indoors on any smooth, flat surface, such as a sports hall, rather than on ice. It's a challenging game to get right yet totally accessible, something the WI members feel is important.

Outdoor table tennis was also being played along with nine-pin bowling, boules, and darts making it a day all could enjoy.

The Whitton Women's Institute also served free afternoon tea that was welcomed by all.

A very sociable sporting evening (including kurling) will now take place on the third Monday of every month starting at 7.30pm where everyone will be welcome. It's free of any charge with the Whitton Women's Institute simply taking their part in bringing people together following the closure of the village school. Do join them on October 17 at the Whitton Community Hall.
