THE president of the Hereford Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic Society, Geoff Rawcliffe, has received a very special NODA Award in recognition of 60 years of service to amateur theatre. Geoff joined the society in 1956 having moved to the area. At the time, the society was short of men to sing in the chorus (a problem which continues to plague operatic societies around the country today) and so Geoff, having previously sung in his church choir, was persuaded to take part. The society performed Yeoman of the Guard which, ironically, is the same show that is currently being rehearsed and will be staged at the Courtyard in March 2017.

The Diamond Bar Award, recognising 60 years of active, unpaid service is somewhat rare. What is rarer still is for someone to complete this length of time with just one society as Geoff has. Having retired from performing only a few years ago along with his wife, Deanne, Geoff has continued as president, attending regular committee meetings and providing support behind the scenes as well as front of house during the week of the show.

Several other members also received NODA long service awards at the AGM, including society secretary Gill Haslam, musical director Alan Durman and backstage helper John Hyde, who all completed 45 years of service. Hereford G&S Society extends its warmest congratulations and thanks to them all for their hard work and support.
