CONCERNS have been raised about a proposed travellers site in Ross-on-Wye, which councillors said is too near the town centre.

At the monthly Ross-on-Wye Town Council meeting, councillors said they did not support the proposed site for travellers on land next to Broadmeadow Yard in Ross, next to Morrisons.

The site has been put forward as part of the preferred options in a travellers consultation being run by Herefordshire Council.

Cllr Richard Mayo said the county has legally got to find room for travellers but added: "Looking at the other options put forward for other towns a lot of the others seem to be on the edge of town rather than this, which is not in the heart of the town but very close to it."

The Ross site proposes room for five caravans and towing vehicles.

Other sites proposed in the document include land at the A49 roundabout Leominster, land adjacent to Whitfield Coppice in Trumpet and open fields at Bromyard.

Cllr Jenny Hyde said the town council has agreed to put money towards a barrier for Red Meadow car park in Ross to stop travellers staying there.

She added: "Ross has put up with a lot more than most but this is how we are treated."

The consultation finishes on September 19. Go to www.herefordshire.gov.uk/planning-and-building-control/planning-policy/travellers-sites-document
