A DAD celebrating the birth of his second child collided with a wall in Hereford while being more than twice the drink-drive limit.

Norman Rashid of Whitehill, Weobley was out celebrating in Hereford with his friends on June 11 when he decided to drive to go and pick his friend up from a house in the city.

The 27-year-old then crashed his Land Rover into a garden wall at the corner of Ledbury Road and St Owen Street after he lost control.

When police arrived he was breathalysed and had 85mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath- the legal limit is 35mg.

He pleaded guilty to drink-driving and also to failing to stop on being required to do so by a constable.

Lesley Ashton, prosecuting, said a member of the public had called the police at 2.30am to say they thought a drunk person was driving a Land Rover in Holmer Road and gave officers the registration number.

A police officer on foot patrol spotted the vehicle in Blueschool Street and indicated for him to stop and spoke briefly to him through the open window but Rashid then drove off towards Bath Street.

The court heard he had been out in Hereford to celebrate the birth of his second daughter and had consumed "a few cognacs" but could not remember how many.

Rashid said he could not remember seeing the police officer at the side of the road.

The court heard he had a previous conviction for drink-driving in 2015.

Marilena Divitantonio, mitigating, said Rashid had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

He was disqualified from driving for 40 months, with the option of taking a drink-drive rehabilitation course to reduce this by a quarter. He was fined £250 and ordered to pay £135 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
