THE current exhibition, Open Eyes, Open Minds, at The Apple Store Gallery in Rockfield Road features vibrant acrylic paintings by Stella Hidden and drop formed glass vessels created by glass artist Beryl Morgans.

“When asked whether my work is abstract, contemporary, modern, expressionist, non-figurative, non-representational or any of the other 'classifying' words used regarding art," says Stella, "it is difficult to assign my work to just one, as it has elements of many.

"Based in a Dovecote studio in rural Herefordshire, England, I aim to create truly original vibrantly colourful artworks using acrylics on birch board or paper, and they can take months, even years, to refine and complete.”

Glass artist Beryl Morgans, explains that her inspiration has been on the structures she has encountered while walking along the Severn Estuary and their interaction with the fluidity of the water. "I am especially drawn to the angular lines of the structures and subdued colour tones of the surrounding area," she says.

"Glass by its very nature is unforgiving but it still holds a fascination for me. I’ve learned that it can’t be forced into doing anything it doesn’t want to, it has to be coaxed gently and even then it still is defiant, breaking at the least provocation. It has the ability to alter the depth and tone of colour, which for me, may link into my delight in drawing and the richness of tone that can be achieved with a single colour.”

Open Eyes, Open Minds - Summer Colour runs at The Apple Store Gallery until August 20.
