A TOWN council has vowed to fight racist behaviour in their community following the Brexit vote.

Kington Town Council is the latest to publicly oppose racist comments being made following a rise in alleged hate crime following the referendum vote last month.

An emergency resolution was put before the council at their meeting on Monday night.

It stated: "Residents from whatever nation are welcome in Kington and as a community we want to make everybody feel welcome.

"We will ensure that those residents here from the EU are welcome and we welcome the recent contribution they have made to the community.

"We deplore racist behaviour and aim to ensure that this behaviour will have no part in our community."

The resolution was unanimously passed by councillors.

It was revealed at Monday's meeting that a European shopworker in Kington had been told to "go back to where they came from".

Similar incidents in Leominster and Hereford have also been reported.

Cllr Christine Forrester brought the motion before the town council before hearing about the incident in Kington.

She added: "I feel very strongly generally following the incidents going on in other parts of the country.

"I thought we needed to send out a message particularly to those in Kington from other European countries to say we value the contribution they make to our community.

"We wanted to send a message out to the people of Kington that they will continue to be welcome whatever their religion, race of beliefs."
