DAY-old duckings sent shoppers quackers when they took a trip through Hereford's High Town last week.

The new ducklings – who had hatched in the garden of Hook Mason Limited in Widemarsh Street – found themselves landlocked in the middle of a busy shopping plaza after their early morning walk.

They were led by their mum past the Coffee Cart and through the centre of High Town to WHSmith – possibly for some early reading lessons – where they caught the attention of a small crowd who attempted to decide on the best course of action.

Sasha Norris from Herefordshire Wildlife Rescue, said: "The problem is the mother duck can fly but the young can't.

"We tried to catch her, but when she got frightened she just took off. "Given the number of people around, the best approach seemed to be to keep the family together and walk them quietly to safety."

With the help of staff from Hook Mason, Ms Norris and her team herded the ducks to the relative safety of the castle green pond.

People on their way to work, shoppers and dog walkers had to wait while the new family made their way – very slowly – through town.

They travelled along Offa Street, past Hereford Caathedral and into the Castle Green.

Ms Norris added: "Life isn't easy for young ducks – there are lots of hazards but they stand a much better chance by the water with natural vegetation to hide in.

"Thanks for all those concerned about them. It is heart-warming to see how patient and kind the public are when it comes to their vulnerable wild creatures.

"We truly are a nation of animal lovers."
