PUPILS at a Hereford primary school heard first hand what it is like to be a nonagenarian before writing about their experiences.

Students from Year 4 at St Francis Xavier’s Primary School took part in the writing competition titled ‘90 Years of Life’ which was run by the Lord-Lieutenant of Herefordshire to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday.

The children were asked to write a prose or poem recounting an interview with a 90-year-old describing the joys, sorrows and changes of their lifetime.

Two nonagenarians, George Phillips and Freda Taylor came to the school to talk to the children about their experiences.

George and Freda said: "The secret to a happy life is to always smile and laugh a lot and to keep on doing many things, especially trying new things."

Two pupils from the school receive certificates in recognition of their pieces which were awarded to them by Quentin Letts at Hereford Cathedral earlier this month.

Shaun Joseph received highly commended and Jessica Purdy was awarded commended.

Headteacher, Diana Pearce at St Francis Xavier’s Primary School said: "I am so proud of the children but want to acknowledge the initial contribution made by Freda and George who were simply amazing.

"Their eyes were shining and they couldn’t stop smiling. They brought great happiness to everyone."
