A PUB landlord was ordered to pay £790 after failing to display his food hygiene rating which was lower than he expected.

John Roger Golesworthy, who owns The Blue Boar, Hay-on-Wye with his wife Lucinda failed to display their two out of five rating meaning 'improvement necessary'.

Nigel Vaughan, prosecuting on behalf of Powys County Council said that the rating was given to the pub during an inspection which took place in March last year.

A letter was sent to the pub owners in April reminding them that they needed to display their notice in the entrance of their Castle Street pub.

In May last year another visit was undertaken and the food hygiene rating was not displayed.

A fixed penalty notice of £200 was given to Golesworthy and following a further visit in December a further fixed penalty notice was handed to him which also remained unpaid.

Mr Vaughan said: "The environmental health regulator try and get businesses to comply with the regulations but when they fail to do so we then prosecute.

"It is the law and the reason they are there is to help members of the public."

Golesworthy handed a letter to Llandrindod Wells Magistrates Court on Wednesday which stated the rating would have been a four if certain documents had been filled in.

"I've not been as careful as I should have been," he said.

"We've requested to get the score checked again and will display the rating."

Golesworthy was ordered to pay a £400 fine, £150 in costs, £200 legal expenses and a £40 victim surcharge.
