PUPILS from Leominster's primary and secondary schools embarked on a journey into Rudyard Kipling’s magical jungle world during a special literacy trip.

Boys from Leominster Primary School and Earl Mortimer College enjoyed a radically reimagined performance of Jungle Book – complete with skateboards – at Malvern Theatres as part of an ongoing project between the two establishments, which aims to inspire and nurture a love of reading in the pupils.

Earl Mortimer College has a designated Literacy Heroes team of 10 year seven boys, who work closely with students from Leominster Primary School to help aid their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

Dominic Quigley, key stage three coordinator at Earl Mortimer College, said: "It has been such a privilege to see the pupils involved in the scheme at both schools progress in the subject of English and it’s brilliant to watch the boys here at Earl Mortimer inspire their younger counterparts.

“As a reward for their commitment and work so far, and to help inspire future projects, we thought a theatre visit where they got to see this fantastical Jungle Book adaptation would be the perfect reward.

“The theatre is an incredible platform that literally brings to life the incredible world that lies within the pages of a book and helps to demonstrate to pupils that reading really can be for pleasure.”

Olivia Thomas, key stage two coordinator at Leominster Primary School, added that the scheme between the two schools was still in its infancy but is already having a tremendous success.
