PRIME HOGGS - 1488: A terrific entry of hoggs for the time of year sold to a superb trade averaging 193p/kg and topping at 212p/kg.

Meat was king and pen after pen of those export types 200p/kg plus. All weights in demand with the heavies soaring to £103/head for a pen of 58kg with plenty £96/head plus. All firms competing fiercely for hoggs resulting in this excellent trade. More could have been sold on the trade without any detriment.

Spring lambs - 1138: A good quality entry met an improved trade with SQQ 218.7p with top of 30kg at £72, 240p. Standards to 239.2p and mediums to 225p. Top price per head £97.50 for 45.5kg, £97.20 for 46.5kg, £96.80 for 46kg. All good export lambs 215p+ with plenty in the 220's.

Rearing/weaned calves - 16: A better quality entry of 7 rearing calves which sold to £385 for the first calf offered. A British Blue cross heifer at 27 days selling for £380 with the bull from the same farm at £375. The run of 5 Hereford cross calves were well received - bulls selling from £280 to £340, with the heifer at £200. 9 weaned calves sold to £650 for a pair of Blue cross heifers with other younger sorts from £505 to £585. 3 Hereford cross heifers sold at £570. More calves could be sold each week.

Ewes/hoggs and lambs - 1399 and 1776: Sponsored by Ball of Madley. What can only be described as an 'amazing day' - a record entry and some super quality couples. Top price of the day was £215 for the champion pen from Mrs B M Horne, Hatfield who sold 15 Welsh Mule yearlings with their 30 Texel cross lambs. Ewes with good conformation lambs sold to best interest throughout with Texel ewes with single ram lambs selling to £200 on four occasions, and generally from £150 to £194. Bunches of younger ewes were always in demand with prices from £152 to £178 for the better sorts, others from £110 to £145. Bunches of full and broken mouth ewes with doubles sold from £120 to £155. Other lowland ewes in backward condition from £80 to £118 with customers for all sorts, virtually a total clearance was effected. Hill ewes all sold to good competition with doubles from £85 to £120. Those singles with stronger lambs from £80 to £95, others from £60 to £78.

The entry included 509 hoggs, mostly with single lambs. An excellent selection of both Texel and Suffolk crosses sold to an improving trade throughout. Best Suffolk cross Mules topped at £188 with many from £155 to £186. Others from £118 to £145. Best Texel cross from £158 to £181. Other all sold well from £130 to £152. Some good quality Mules on offer sold to £168 for smart Welsh Mules with Texel cross lambs. The run of North Country Mule hoggs sold consistently from £150 to £166. Overall average £132.94/couple being £58.50/life.

Dry ewe hoggs - 386: A similar entry met with a large crowd of onlookers but fewer men prepared to do any business. Still waiting for a flush of grass and maybe a sign of the times. Strong Texel cross hoggs to £114, other Texel cross Mules generally smaller and from £75 to £90. Some would be worth it all to kill. Suffolk cross Mules generally smaller, better sorts to £90, others £80 to £85. More Mules on show, these topped at £100 for strong white faced sorts, others to £99. Smaller sorts from £75 to £85. Customers for the strongest and sweetest headed sorts, others valued accordingly.

Store hoggs - 160: A smaller entry but still competitive trading, strongest to £77.20, others £69 to £74.20. Smaller farming hoggs from £54 to £62.50. Plainer and smaller hoggs from £38 to £50.

Cull ewes - 1992: An excellent entry of ewes sold to another superb trade averaging £75/head which would be dearer again than last week, topping at a flying £139/head. Plenty of continental types in excess of £120/head. Plenty of demand with any amount of Suffolks £90 to £100/head. The top 20 prices were all in excess of £114/head which is a clear indication of the buoyant trade we had. All buyers present and more could have been sold.
